Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) for me is almost a form of meditation. Gliding along crystal waters, sun shining down on me, penguin spotting (well once anyway) and with every stoke of the paddle I leave my worries behind me… BLISS.
Just to be clear, I haven’t ventured out into the deep wide ocean yet (um, sharks) but even so, flat waters and all, this once called ‘fad’ workout looks like it is here to stay, and for good reason too.
Benefits to entice include:
Low impact: Need a low impact exercise thats kind to your tendons, ligaments and joints? SUP is for you. Add to that the soothing sounds as you glide through the water, the sensation of actually walking on water, and the rhythm of your stroke… feel the stress melt away. Sounds better than shin splint right?!
Improves balance: Obviously being on an unstable surface is going to assist in improving your balance. But the best bit? Thanks to your body having to recruit those smaller stability muscles to stand upright on the board, it helps with weak ankles, plus increases core and leg strength to maintain an upright position.
Full body workout: Almost every muscle in the body is used at some point during paddleboarding. Because of the balance required, leg muscles will be hard at work attempting to stabilize your centre of gravity, while the arms, back and shoulders are used to propel the paddleboard in the water. The core, back and abdominal muscles are constantly at work to maintain your balance.
Cardio workout: Sure, you could use your time on the water to get a little Zen, but try picking up the (paddle) pace for a little and whola, your session just turned into a good ol cardio workout.
Mood booster: No one can argue that simply being out in nature and on the water is going to have a calming effect on your mental health and attitude. Add to the mix a little Vitamin D and you’re sorted.
The kit: I couldn’t be crushing on the new Jets active paddlebarding leather look swimsuit anymore. This is essential. Hey, you gotta look the part right?
Skin: I’m seriously loving what La Mav BB Creme is doing for my skin. Added bonus is it contains natural suncream while also providing effective coverage.
Shoes: These black slip ons from modesportif.com. Swoon.
Hydrate: Curo Alkaline water is where it’s at.
Snack: Make sure you have a snack in your bag post paddle, but don’t undo all your hard work with poor choices. Choose smart and go for my fave Soma Organics bars (grab from Woolworths for only $2.95).
The towel: sure you could spend hundreds on a towel, or you could shop fashion designer Peter Morrissey’s homeware range from Big W and use your savings towards oh say 10 lunches. You’re welcome.
